Every February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and festivities that honour the legacy of Black people in Canada and their communities. The 2023 theme for Black History Month is: “Ours to tell”. This theme represents both an opportunity to engage in open dialogue and a commitment to learning more about the stories Black communities in Canada have to tell about their histories, successes, sacrifices and triumphs.
So, what is Sankofa all about? Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana. The literal translation of the word and the symbol is “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.” (to return, to go, to look back, to return to the future.) Sankofa is the theme chosen by BCS to honor the past, and ignite the future. Why this word?
‘Essentially, that’s what we are doing here with Black History Month. Looking back on the past, trying to understand how our blackness has been defined, and how it can help us redefine ourselves in relation to our future,” said Aaron in a recent Instagram video.
There are tons of events, discussions, live music and things happening all month long. Here’s some things you can check out in person or online!
Be sure to come try Sankofa at our locations this month while quantities last. You can find more information on events, programming and more on their Instagram and Facebook pages. Cheers!
